CITY OF CHELAN GETS GRANT TO BUILD LIBRARY
The City of Chelan has received a $490,000 Community Development Block Grant. The CDB grant will go a long way toward renovating the former Masonic Lodge for use as a much larger public library. The current library is just too small for the numerous patrons who use the library daily.
The City of Chelan purchased the historic 1928 building last year for use as its library, but the building needs remodeling in order to bring it up to code for its new life as a public library, part of the North Central Regional Library system. The building's second floor will be rented by the city for meetings by various community groups. The CDB grant will allow the renovation and expansion project to be completed by late next summer.
LARGE GRANT GIVEN TO CHELAN LIBRARY RENOVATION PROJECT
Last week the Chelan Friends of the Library learned that the group is the recipient of a $20,000 grant from the Icicle Fund. That Leavenworth foundation is dedicated to funding organizations that support the arts, the environment and history in North Central Washington. The Icicle Fund's interests and the Chelan Friends of the Library's are aligned in that both believe in providing experiential opportunities specifically for young people and to culturally diverse members of a community through educational opportunities. This will be possible when the library moves into a new library in the former Masonic Temple on Emerson Street, after that building's renovation.
The new library will have space for many kinds of artistic opportunities for library patrons. There is already a stage in the building. The renovation and expansion campaign of the Friends of the Library and the City of Chelan has reached $105,838, ever closer to the goal of $160,000 that the campaign needs in contributions from the Lake Chelan community.
FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY
All are welcome to join us at the library. New members are always welcome. The Chelan Friends of the Library is a non-profit organization dedicated to the support of quality library service in the Chelan community through fund-raising, volunteerism and advocacy. The Chelan Friends of the Library has a website (Chelan Friends) designed to help raise money to expand and renovate our library.
The City of Chelan was recently awarded a planning grant for the Chelan Public Library Expansion Project. Meetings are the second Monday of each month at 7:00pm at the Chelan Public Library.
