Spring author announced!

We are excited to announce that bestselling author Tara Westover, whose book Educated was one of the most critically acclaimed books of 2018, will be coming to Wenatchee and Omak in April for public speaking events.

We are encouraging everyone to read the book, a memoir that chronicles Westover’s journey from growing up in a survivalist family in Idaho with no formal education to earning a PhD from Cambridge University.

Westover will speak at Wenatchee High School on April 12 and the Omak Performing Arts Center on April 13. Her talks will also be live streamed to several of our branch libraries.

For the past several years, we have presented community reading programs, asking everyone across the five-county library district to read the same book and then bringing celebrated authors such as Cheryl Strayed, Anthony Doerr, and Timothy Egan to North Central Washington. The one-read program has gone by several different names in the past but is now called NCRL Reads.

“NCRL Reads is about sparking conversations and connections within our community by reading the same book,” said Amanda Brack, adult services manager for NCRL. “Tara Westover's story is the perfect vehicle for inspiring conversations about issues that unite us all: overcoming obstacles, the power of education, the joy and tumult of family relationships, and finding our own unique identity and place in the world. The popularity and accolades Educated has received prove that the heart of Tara's story is deeply human and resonates with us all.”

Educated was named the best book of 2018 by Amazon and Microsoft founder Bill Gates chose it as his favorite book of 2018.
